about where, how and why diplomats are keys actors in the many ways the trade
of textile and the culture of clothing is spread out on a global scale through
time and space. The research theme chosen by
Corinne Thépaut-Cabasset for CTR's Research & Development day is presented through a series of case studies
investigating the impact of diplomacy and secret service in the area of Dress
and Textile. </span></span></div>

circuits has not yet attracted the attention of researchers in fashion history.
Nonetheless the diplomatic archives conserve numerous documents of diverse
types concerning directly the study of fashion and more generally that of
taste. Attentive observers of the society of their time and of their
contemporaries, diplomats, had an official and often political mission, thanks
to marriages, births, dynastic events, celebrations of peace and treaties in
which they participated in the place of their sovereign. They also served as
intermediaries and indispensable relays in the movement of ideas, people and
goods. Their role in the workings of the economy remains to be explored.</span></span></div>

style, and equally as lavish as the opulent dress of his female

hallmark of Savile Row. The mid-twentieth-century “mod” relished in the
colorful and modern styles of Carnaby Street, and the 21st century
man—in an ultra-chic “skinny suit” by day and a flowered tuxedo by

women. The exhibition features 200 looks, and celebrates a rich history

However, with progressivist histories, and the term Dark Ages itself, becoming increasingly problematic from a historiographical perspective, we believe it is time for dress history to explore and challenge this model. From the costume book in the 16th century by way of individual, hand-coloured fashion plates to the first fashion magazine to roll off the presses in 1785: Cabinet des Modes. There was no stopping after this and one fashion magazine appeared hard on the heels of the other, reaching an absolute high point in the Gazette du Bon Ton in 1912, full of magnificent art deco illustrations.</span></div>

Over time, changing views of masculinity, self-fashioning, the body, gender, sexuality and culture have all strongly influenced men’s decisions to wear, or not wear, facial hair. For British Tudor men, beards were a symbol of sexual maturity and prowess. Throughout the early modern period, debates also raged about the place of facial hair within a humoural medical framework. The eighteenth century, by contrast, saw beards as unrefined and uncouth; clean-shaven faces reflected enlightened values of neatness and elegance, and razors were linked to new technologies. Victorians conceived of facial hair in terms of the natural primacy of men, and new models of hirsute manliness. All manner of other factors from religion to celebrity culture have intervened to shape decisions about facial hair and shaving.</span></span></span></div>

Les recherches menées en histoire du corps ont ajouté de nouvelles dimensions à ce domaine de recherche. Sur ces bases, et par référence aux processus contemporains qui promeuvent les modes de masse ou uniformisent la gestion des attitudes et des postures, les quelque soixante dernières années auraient pu voir naître des coopérations internationales plus nombreuses, plus ouvertes. Tel n‟a pas été le cas et bien des cloisonnements demeurent. </span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: small;">For several decades now Fashion has ceased to be seen as a repertoire of perpetually evolving forms for the researcher to strive to observe, with an eye to drawing up some illusory and ultimately futile inventory. In the wake of works by Georg Simmel, Norbert Elias, Roland Barthes, etc., ways of dressing and adorning the body have been analysed using concepts which place the individual within a network of social norms. Research conducted in the history of the body has added new dimensions to this field of research. This could have acted as the basis over the past sixty or so years for more numerous and open forms of international cooperation to emerge with regard to the contemporary processes that promote mass fashion and generate uniform means of shaping attitudes and postures. This has not been the case, however, and many barriers persist. This international symposium will provide a multidisciplinary analysis of museum and university discourses, concepts, experiments and experiences, and of their intellectual origins and the institutional frameworks within which they are produced across diverse local and national contexts. The aim is to better understand the various ways of tackling the subject so as to highlight new areas of research convergence, thereby giving new impetus to international cooperation. </span></div>

This exhibition showcases these secret inner-workings that are usually out of sight. Pockets, quilted linings, boning and labels all come to light when the garments are flipped inside out.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The pieces selected for this exhibition, which span the eighteenth to the twentieth century and include both men’s and women’s wear, are excellent examples of their respective eras. Unlike many period garments, which have been reworked or have had their linings and waistbands altered or removed, these pieces have maintained a remarkable degree of integrity. In fact, in some cases, the insides are as beautifully finished as the outsides. </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Fashion history usually focuses on changing silhouettes with the rise and fall of hemlines or the tightening and loosening of waistlines. Underlying these external shifts are structural changes that appear only when the garments are laid out and examined closely. Creating three-dimensional garments from bolts of cloth demands solving certain basic problems: how to finish the edges, how to fasten the garments, how to shape the material around the body’s curves. Dressmakers and tailors have addressed these problems with a number of ingenious methods. Some of these techniques reappear in every era while others are specific to a period. Technological innovations have had a direct effect on construction techniques. The invention of snaps and zippers obviously affected designs, as did wider looms and sewing machines. This exhibition tracks these changes with a careful selection of representative pieces, which are mounted in ways to allow visitors to take a close look at the interiors.</span></div>

historique », « simulation historique » ou « histoire vivante »
sont autant d'expressions qui désignent des pratiques de recomposition du
passé, à travers un événement marquant de celui-ci ou le mode de vie militaire
ou civil d'une période donnée. Très vivantes dans les pays anglo-saxons (<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">historical reenactment</i>, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">living history</i>), ces pratiques sont en
plein essor en France. Les acteurs y sont de plus en plus nombreux, avec une
prédilection pour le Moyen Âge. Une « Association pour l'histoire vivante »
s'est créée pour en faire la promotion et diffuse des publications spécialisées.
Un magasine <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Vivre l'histoire</i> est
apparu début 2014.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

pratique de la recomposition physique, matérielle et visuelle du passé reste toutefois
en marge du monde scientifique et académique, à quelques exceptions près
(archéologie expérimentale pour la reconstitution des techniques ; expérimentation
du geste, par exemple). Elle attire néanmoins depuis peu l'intérêt de
chercheurs en histoire, en sociologie ou ethnologie qui étudient cette activité
bien au-delà se son aspect récréatif. On appréhende ainsi à travers elle les
usages et l'appropriation publiques du passé et de l'histoire (Gil Bartholeyns,
2013 ; Marilyne Crivello, 2014), les enjeux identitaires et mémoriels (Audrey
Tuaillon-Demesy, 2013), les dispositifs et méthodes de simulation historique (programme
« Toutes époques confondues : la simulation historique et ses méthodes »
du Labex « Les passés dans le présent », université de Paris 10). <o:p></o:p></span></div>

propos, dans le cadre du séminaire de l'axe Cultures matérielles et visuelles
de l'IRHiS, est d'envisager la place de ces dernières dans les pratiques de
reconstitution historique. Une grande partie de ces activités passe en effet
par la re-création des cultures matérielles de la période appréhendée par les
reconstituteurs. La culture matérielle d'une époque donnée fonctionne en effet
comme le signe ou marqueur visuel du temps historique recréé, sans lequel la
simulation ne peut s'opérer. La reconstitution des <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">costumes historiques</b> servira d'étude de cas pour notre séminaire en
